Australia gives $37-million to support spending on youth mental health

Australia is planning to spend an extra A$51.8 million ($37 million) on support to young people with mental health issues, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Sunday.

This was made known a week ahead of a crucial by-election for Morrison’s ruling Liberal-National coalition, and the money will go to Headspace, a government youth group that runs 107 centers across Australia.

“I want to ensure we give hope to young people … who are struggling with mental health,” Morrison told reporters.

The funds will be an addition to A$95.7 million the centers already receive from the government each year. Most of the sum will go toward services and adding staff, with A$12.8 million earmarked for online counseling and treatment programs.

“Headspace isn’t just about getting counseling services,” Morrison said. “It’s everything from helping young people get a job to supporting their physical activity to improving their relationships. It is dealing with the whole person.”

“More young people are seeking help and more young people are getting help,” Headspace Chief Executive Officer Jason Trethowan told journalists. “And we don’t want young people to be waiting any longer than they need to.”

According to Morrison’s office, the investment in Australia’s mental health will reach $4.7 billion this year alone.

Atiku: How Enugu residents reacted to Peter Obi’s emergence as PDP VP candidate

Scores of Enugu State residents on Saturday, expressed joy, as the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, named former governor of Anambra, Mr Peter Obi, his running mate for the 2019 presidential election.

Some of the residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu, said that Atiku made a right choice in picking Obi as his running mate.

A legal practitioner, Mr Nicholas Ude, noted that the choice of the former governor would bring about a positive change, adding that Obi did very well while in office.

“All the sectors in Anambra during Obi’s tenure were properly fixed for the benefit of every Anambra person.

“I, however, hope that he will do the same if elected as Atiku’s vice president,” he said.

In his views, Mr Okechukwu Adibe, another legal practitioner, said that Obi’s impressive performance in his eight years as governor, was why he was chosen by Atiku.

“The former governor exhibited good governance in Anambra through his good knowledge of the economy across all sectors in the state,” he said.

For Cyprian Nnodu, the former governor corrected all the wrongs in governance in Anambra, making the state to stand as one of the best states in Nigeria.

Nnodu, a lawyer, however, called on youths and politicians to emulate Obi’s performance, noting that good character and integrity were of important in a person’s life and career.

In the same vein, Mrs Nneka Dim, a psychologist, said that people would hardly forget Obi’s performance as a governor in the state.

“Obi, through his knowledge of the economy, gave his best in repositioning Anambra as well as putting it on a good and high standard.

“This, I believe, is why Atiku picked him. I am sure that if Atiku wins, the country will not be disappointed,” she added.

Meanwhile, a businessman, Mr Ikechukwu Ani, described Obi’s choice as a welcome development in Nigeria.

He added that with Obi on board, many wrongs would be corrected as he did during his time as a governor.

“Obi performed well and everyone felt it, especially in the areas of road infrastructure, health, education, judiciary among others,” Ani added.

Countinho says Barcelona current form is not normal

Barcelona terrific attacker, Philippe Coutinho has admitted that his team’s current form “is not normal”, but the Brazilian is confident that the Catalan outfit will overcome their recent troubles.

The Spanish giants have only won one of their last five La Liga matches and are without a victory in their last four.

The disappointing run of form has seen the Catalan outfit drop off the top of the table, and Coutinho has conceded that his side are currently going through a tough patch.

That said, the former Liverpool attacker has insisted that there is ‘no reason to panic’.

“Going four [league] matches without a win is not normal for this club,” Diario Sport quotes Coutinho as saying.

“A football season is a long time and lots of things can happen, so the situation is always amplified but we know not to panic.

“I am not worried because I know this team, we are still in at the top end of the table and we made a strong start in the Champions League. We are calm.”

Barcelona will return to La Liga action with a home game against table-topping Sevilla on October 20.

For five days, Calabar converged at the University of Calabar, Cross River, for the Pulse Campus Invasion. It was five days out of the ordinary hustle and bustle of school activities and MTN Nigeria fired on all cylinders to make it a superlative experience for all.

From Monday, 1st October to Friday, 5th October 2018, the whole school was buzzing about the many activities at the Retail Village, where exciting activities ruled the day – from life-size table games, to dancing competitions, etc.

The student body had been gisting about the ‘Celebrity Surprise’ visit that was going to take place at an undisclosed hostel on campus. Students were encouraged to vote for the hostel of their pick and since no one knew who was coming the excitement that took over the school was infectious.

On Wednesday evening, students poured in from around the Campus to the Malabor Girls hostel in UNICAL to be thrilled and the Pulse Invasion did not miss a beat. The DJ kept the students jumping on their feet. Comedy took its turn when the MC switched to his funny side and had the students in stitches. Soon whispers swept through the audience – some people had spotted someone that resembled DMW signee Mayorkun. Screams of excitement later confirmed the whispers – the Tear Rubber singer, had landed on the campus and was headed for the field near the Malabor Hostel!
