Treating sleep apnea may help improve stroke outcomes

Treating a common sleep disorder immediately after a stroke or mini-stroke may improve patients’ neurological symptoms and daily functioning, a small study suggests.

At least 25 million adults in the U.S. have obstructive sleep apnea, which causes their airway to close, briefly halting breathing, for a few seconds multiple times during sleep. The condition has been linked with increased risk for heart attack, hypertension, sudden death, stroke and faster progression of cardiovascular disease. Sleep apnea sufferers can use CPAP machines to keep their airway open during sleep.

In the study, researchers found that stroke patients diagnosed with sleep apnea saw greater improvements in both neurological symptoms and daily ability to function when they used CPAP compared to patients with apnea who only received usual medical care.

“I think the implications of the study are that patients with stroke and TIA should receive early diagnostic testing with a sleep study. If they have sleep apnea then we should treat them before they leave the hospital,” said lead author Dawn M. Bravata, research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute and Richard L. Rouedeush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

For the new analysis, researchers studied 252 adults hospitalized for an ischemic stroke or a mini-stroke, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA). They screened everyone for sleep apnea and found that roughly three-quarters of patients had the sleep breathing disorder.

About two-thirds of patients with sleep apnea were assigned to one of two interventions that included receiving a CPAP machine as well as training and encouragement in its use. The other third with sleep apnea served as a control group and received usual medical care, plus a recommendation at the end of the study to seek CPAP treatment.

Patients’ neurological symptoms and their ability to function in normal activities like walking and self-care were assessed at the beginning of the study and six months to one year later.

At follow-up, all of the patients showed improvement in both neurological symptoms and functional status, however 59 percent of the patients who used CPAP had neurological symptom scores at or close to normal, in contrast with just 38 percent of controls.

“All the evidence suggests if you treat sleep apnea early, the better your stroke outcome will be. But it would be hard for a hospital to do. They would have to reconfigure their sleep services to be acute,” Bravata said in a phone interview.

“If physicians could reduce some disability due to post-stroke events it would be huge,” said Michael Twery, director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Center on Sleep Disorders Research, who wasn’t involved in the study.

One of the limitations of the new analysis, which was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, is that it was conducted at only two sites.

A new, Phase Three multicenter study conducted by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke will be more representative, Twery noted. “It will establish which patients benefit from a new treatment and how much do they benefit across many hospital locations.”

New designs in CPAP machines have become streamlined and are smaller than a shoebox. The mask comes in different styles, Bravata said. “It’s sort of like shoe shopping. It’s a matter of finding things you like that fits you very well.”

“Treating stroke or TIA patients with CPAP will never replace traditional therapies. But patients should be asking their physicians to be tested for sleep apnea if they have symptoms of it,” said Larry Goldstein, chairman of neurology and co-director of the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute in Lexington, who wasn’t involved in the study.

Rape Allegation: Ronaldo Removed From EA Sports’ Online Branding Of “FIFA 19”

Rape Allegation: Ronaldo Removed From EA Sports’ Online Branding Of “FIFA 19”

In the wake of the rape allegation scandal that has befallen him, football star, Cristiano Ronaldo, appears to have been removed from all social media promotions for the football video game, EA Sports.

The video game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) also expressed concern about the rape allegations against the soccer star and “FIFA 19” cover athlete yesterday.

“We have seen the concerning report that details allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo,” EASports told the Associated Press.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, as we expect cover athletes and ambassadors to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with EA’s values.”

“FIFA 19” which was released on September 28, also features Ronaldo prominently on the cover.

EA Sports also recently depicted the soccer player on its Twitter banner, but that image has been reportedly swapped for one of the “FIFA 19” logo and review quotes.

Ronaldo has since been removed from all EA sport’ other social media pages – as he is no where to be seen on the official Facebook banner for the brand.

The star previously featured on EA Sports’ homepage on their website as the cover star for FIFA’19.

However, an EA spokesperson told Eurogamer the company updates its social banners for certain marketing beats.

Earlier this month, a woman named Kathryn Mayorga claimed Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009. A lawsuit was filed in a Clark County, Nevada court last Friday.

Ronaldo dismissed the allegations on Twitter Wednesday.

“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me,” he said. “Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.”

“My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.”

Past Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, current Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and aspiring governor set to run under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Babajide Sanwoolu were pictured seated next to each other at the party’s National Convention last night.

Held at the Eagle Square, Abuja, the APC National Convention saw a gathering of over 7,000 delegates who affirmed President Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of the party in the 2019 general elections.

Just last weekend, Governor Ambode in a world press conference indirectly described Sanwoolu as “unfit to rule” Lagos state as they both battled for votes at the state primaries.

Ambode accused Sanwoolu of being arrested in the United States for spending fake dollars at a night club and also asserted that he is medically unfit with proof at Gbagada General Hospital.

Sanwoolu later emerged winner in the primary election and was congratulated by Ambode who immediately conceded defeat.

5 new Ebola cases confirmed in eastern Congo: health ministry

The Congolese health ministry has reported a further five confirmed cases of Ebola in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The ministry blamed the higher-than-normal daily increase on community resistance to disease response efforts.

The current epidemic in Congo’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces has seen 140 confirmed cases since July, 108 of whom have died, according to the ministry’s daily bulletin, which has been reporting an average of one to two new confirmed cases per day in recent weeks.

According to the ministry, the five new cases were located in the regional hub of Beni, where attacks by rebel groups in the area and local mistrust of the Ebola response campaign have disrupted treatment and vaccination programs.

“The town of Beni has become the new focus point of the disease, registering the highest percentage of cases reported in recent weeks following community resistance of certain families,” it said in a statement.

The fight against Ebola is more elaborated in recent years since it was discovered near the Congo River in 1976, but rumors, misinformation and a preference for traditional medical practices have hampered the roll-out of effective treatments during the current outbreak.

Just few days ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the epidemic was at a critical juncture due to security threats, community mistrust and an increased geographical spread of the disease.

“We are very concerned about the potential for the virus to spread into Uganda, but also into Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi,” WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday.

7 Nigerian Artistes That Were Relevant In 2017 But Are Irrelevant This Year (No. 5 Always Claims To Be Too Good)

Only musicians that can create consistency of excellence year-in-year-out are deserved to be called champions in the industry.

This post is not to ridicule the musical efforts of any artiste, it’s just to call our attention to the fact that some artistes who shook the industry last year, 2017 couldn’t keep up this year. Funny tho 😂😂

Below are top 7 Nigerian artistes who were buzzing last year with hit songs but are struggling to find relevance in 2018:-

1. Tekno

Last year, Tekno was a big star in the music industry with his releases like “Yawa“, “Samantha“, “Be” among other making hits.

You’d recall that, Tekno almost placed himself on the same level with Wizkid and Davido last year. It’s funny how he had to sample Danfo Driver’sKpolongo” in a bid to make big hit this year.

At the end of the day, the song still no hit 😂😂

2. Small Doctor

“Won ti gba penalty lo throwing” was Small Doctor’s last hit song. To be honest, the song served Omo Better all through last year.

His attempt to make his song “This Year” another big hit that will stand the test of time failed because it came out as a song enjoyable only during festive season.

It’s also quite unfortunate that his nursery school song, “Remember” could not make it to the top of the radar.

Omo better, Ki lo n sele??

3. Slimcase

“Rubilanshi, ta lo wo le to jade nsin?” ðŸ˜‚😂 It’s definately Slimcase himself. He came in big in 2017, but seems to be fading out gradually this 2018.

And as a matter of fact, nobody gives a damn about shaku-shaku again. Only if baba can adjust to industry changes, then he’s got hope.

Better still, he should stick to collaboration. Helping other artistes to add lambas to their songs won’t be a bad idea afterall.

4. Mr Real

“Legbegbe“ crooner, Mr Real is suffering the same faith as Slimcase but the only difference is that, Mr. Real has not made any tangible effort in terms of dropping a single to compliment his found fame in 2017. All we got is “Legbegbe Remix“.

Maybe, he will drop another song when another celebrity enter computer village to steal Apple Laptop.

“Oya, Macbook 1 legbegbe” 😂

5. Reekado Banks

Who else remembers when Reekado Banks said he is better than Lil Kesh’s papa?

He made the statement of pride all because he had like 3 hit songs last year, “Ladies & Gentlemen“, “Easy“ and “Like“.

Now, it’s 10 months into 2018, Reeky Baby has not made any remarkable hit. And we are feeling Lil Kesh already.

“Flenjo“ is bigger than “Bio Bio“, argue with your keypad.

6. Junior Boy

He is a product of meaningful collaboration but it’s quite unfortunate that he is finding it hard to keep up.

His last big hit was “Irapada” featuring 9ice. Obviously, he has what it takes to do more but only God knows what is holding him back from dropping another hit to continue is good music run.

7. Ycee

2017 was a fulfilled year for Ycee as “Juice“ featuring Maleek Berry turned out to be one of the biggest songs in 2017.

This year, Ycee is totally off the radar as most of his songs this year didn’t even make it to limelight.

Probably Omo Alhaji should stop singing like a foreigner for now.
