What are some home remedies for bad breath?

One of the most effective ways to treat bad breath is to drink plenty of water. Dehydration causes bad breath because bacteria thrive in dry mouth conditions and low-oxygen environments. Drinking herbal or green tea, chewing sugarless gum and drinking less coffee also reduce bad breath. Gargling salt water is helpful in removing bacteria from the throat that causes bad breath.

Eating raw vegetables and fresh fruits, such as apples, oranges, carrots and celery, can help remove plaque build-up that often causes bad breath. Eating zinc-rich foods, such as cacao, pumpkin and organ meats, is beneficial as zinc deficiency is a leading cause of bad breath.

Bad breath is also caused by poor dietary habits as they tend to cause a build-up of toxins inside the body. Consuming probiotic-rich foods, such as fermented sauerkraut and yogurt, as well as herbs, such as sage, licorice and parsley, allows the digestive system to function properly, warding off bad breath. Eating regularly increases the flow of saliva, and since saliva is full of oxygen, bacteria cannot survive.

Avoid certain foods and drinks that cause bad breath, such as alcohol, onions, garlic and strong cheeses. Avoid smoking or the use of other tobacco products as they tend to cause bad breath.
