Pathologist reveals domestic violence victim, Ronke Shonde, died from brain injury

Hearing in the case of Ronke Shonde, the mother of two who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Lekan, continued yesterday, September 25th with a pathologist with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Dr S.S. Soyele, revealing that the deceased died from severe brain injury.

Soyele said a postmortem conducted on Ronke’s corpse revealed that her brain was heavy, swollen and filled with water.

Recall that in May 2016, the story of how the mother of two was beaten to death by her 51-year-old husband following an argument at their home in the Egbeda-Idimu area of Lagos State.

He was alleged to have locked the door of their home with her corpse and their two children before the incident was discovered by a housekeeper who came in to resume for the day.

Lekan upon surrendering himself to the police, told the police that himself and his wife got into an argument after he found out she was allegedly having an affair with one Kayode, the manager at a publishing company. Shonde said he only slapped her and did not beat her to death as being alleged.

At the resumed hearing of the case against him yesterday, the pathologist said it was unlikely that the deceased inflicted the injuries on herself because of the multiplicity of the wounds.

He also aid Ronke had other head injuries believed to have been sustained from other beatings.

“The deceased died from respiratory failure, caused by cerebral edema (swollen brain), caused by a blunt force trauma to the brain,” he said. “A bruise was found on her left jaw. During autopsy, it was also discovered that the deceased had black eyes (pupils) a tell-tale sign of brain injury.

“We opened up the body and brought out all the organs. We also opened up the skull to bring out the brain. Blood collection was discovered in the skull, just beneath the skin.

“The deceased’s uterus was also brought out and there was no sign of conception. We took samples from the brain in order to determine the cause of death which primarily was respiratory failure caused by trauma to the brain” he said

The pathologist added that the autopsy carried on Ronke showed she had suffered injuries to her brain in the past.

“We took samples from the brain and discovered old haemorrhage (bleeding) in the brain, which suggests past trauma,” the pathologist said

At the previous court proceedings on September 20th, Ronke’s sister, Bolatito Bewaji, had revealed during her testimony that Ronke had approached a lawyer to file for divorce on the day she was allegedly murdered by Lekan.

Bolatito, also a banker, said that Lekan was very possessive of his wife, and would beat her at the slightest opportunity.

“My sister even told me that her husband would lift her up and slam her against the wall, whenever they had an argument. I was not surprised when I got the call on that fateful day that her lifeless and bloodied body had been found because I knew with the way things were going, he would one day kill her,” she said.

The trial judge adjourned the case till October 24th.

‘My Wife Is A Devil’- Pastor Says In Court

A pastor by the name Michael Adebowale has urged the Iseyin Customary Court in Oyo State to dissolve his four-year-old marriage to his wife, Ashabi.

According to NAN, Adebowale has informed the court that the marriage, contracted four years ago, had produced two children.

He said, “My wife, Ashabi, is a devil.

“My wife is evil, I noticed my prayers are not really answered by God like before and I have also noticed that I am now living with a devil.
“She will not attend church or join me in prayers, all she is specialised in is to gossip around town and go to parties.

“I have told her to pack out of my house and she has obeyed me. I want her totally out of my life so that I can begin to receive`anointing’ again from God,” he said.

The President of the court, Mr Adelodun Raheem, after listening to the petitioner, ordered that another summons be served on the respondent.
He said Ashabi must appear in court at its next sitting and adjourned the case until October 5.

A Ghanaian man who deliberately infected two girlfriends with HIV was jailed for five years in the United Kingdom. The 23-year-old slept with two women after being diagnosed as HIV positive and refused any help from doctors or to take any drugs to suppress the virus.

Japhet Osei wooed and bedded two teenagers without telling them about his condition, a judge was told. He did not use any protection with a 17-year-old girl and encouraged a cautious second victim into having sex without a condom because she was his girlfriend.

Osei even lied that a sexual health clinic check-up had found he was clean and showed her a text message to prove it, the court heard.

However, he was keeping the secret that he was not only HIV positive but that he had a particularly high viral count, which meant it was more likely he would infect partners through unprecedented sex.

Both women, who cannot be identified for legal reasons and were referred to as Miss A and Miss B throughout the hearing, quickly fell ill and tests showed Osei had passed the virus onto each of them.

Expert analysis found that they shared exactly the same strain of the virus. Today, Judge Angela Morris, sitting at Reading Crown Court, said Osei, wearing a blue tracksuit, had “lied, lied and lied again.”

Jailing him for a total of five years she said: “We are not living in the 1980s where everyone was ignorant of the effects of this disease and running around in a panic.

“This is 30 years later. You were provided with expertise, assistance and the opportunity for treatment for the terrible disease you knew you carried and you refused it.

“Despite your knowledge of your medical condition, you embarked on a sexual relationship. Your actions are totally inexcusable.”

She added that she had read the “harrowing ordeal” each woman had subsequently gone through physically and mentally since diagnosis, via their victim impact statements.

She also ordered that Osei should be the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order where he is not permitted to have sex with any woman without telling her about his HIV status.
