Immigrants were 28 percent more likely to die of external causes and more than twice as likely to die of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis and HIV than people who were born in their adopted homelands.

However, immigrants were less likely to die from a variety of other causes including heart disease, digestive disorders, endocrine or circulatory problems, mental health disorders, cancers or diseases of the respiratory or nervous systems.

Both men and women appeared to have a longevity advantage after migration. Male immigrants were 28 percent less likely to die prematurely from all causes than native-born men, while female immigrants were 25 percent less likely to die prematurely.

The vast majority of the studies in the analysis focused on migration to high-income countries, not on refugees or asylum seekers. Researchers also excluded studies from their analysis that focused just on migrants with serious or chronic health problems or just on maternal and infant health outcomes.

It may be, however, that migrants in the study were healthier than people in their native countries who didn’t migrate, said Anjali Borhade, director of the Disha Foundation in Gurugram, India, and coauthor of an editorial accompanying the study.

“Educated migrants have better sources of income and being healthy doesn’t affect their choice to migrate,” Borhade said by email. “Also, educated migrants have better living or working conditions and their health status is similar to the host populations, both for risks as well as outcomes.”

Infectious disease and homicide deaths may be higher among migrants than other people in the general population due to unfavorable conditions immigrants face at work and in their new communities, Borhade added. That’s because many young, relatively healthy migrants may take low-paying and dangerous jobs and only be able to afford housing in subpar conditions.

“Hazardous jobs and low living conditions increase their risk of dying due to external causes and infectious diseases,” Borhade said. “However, since migrants are healthier to begin with, their mortality due to other causes might be lower.”

“While it is true that in most U.S. cities, those of higher socioeconomic status live in greener areas, in our study, we statistically adjusted for income and education within that neighborhood, so it seems that the effect of greenness is independent of socioeconomic status,” Bhatnagar added.

Indian drug regulator orders J&J to stop using raw material to make Baby Powder in India

A senior official of India’s drugs regulator has ordered Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) to stop manufacturing its Baby Powder using raw materials in two of its Indian factories until test results prove they are free of asbestos.

 

One official at the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), citing the sensitivity of the matter, said a written order had been sent to the U.S. company telling it to stop using the “huge quantities” of raw materials stocked in its plants in northern and western India.

 

“Whenever inspectors feel there is contamination in one thing they also take samples of (other products) from the same company,” the official said.

“We have told them until this investigation concludes, you should not use the raw material. Test results will take time,” the official added. “Testing for asbestos is not a routine procedure. It might be in traces. It will require us to develop a method and all those things.”

He said that brushing of the teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and replacing your toothbrush every three or four months helped to eliminate bad breath.

The dentist said the symptoms of bad breath vary, depending on the source or the underlying cause.

According to him, some people worry too much about their breath even though they have little or no mouth odor, while others have bad breath and do not know it.

He said the causes of bad breath includes food, poor dental hygiene, tobacco products, lack of balanced diet, wrong medications, dry mouth and lack of drinking water.

Innocent advised anyone with such problems to see a dentist for treatment.

“Patients with PAD need to be more aware of the long-term risks of smoking associated with their disease because it not only leads to worsening of their disease, but also increases their risk of losing limbs from the disease and having heart attacks and strokes. Treatments for PAD such as stents and bypass surgeries often fail if patients continue to smoke. Quitting smoking is difficult, but doing so will help halt the progression of their PAD disease and may even reverse some of these risks.” said lead study author Dr. Krishna Patel of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

“Our results are consistent with a woman being able to lower their cancer risk, even if they remain overweight or obese after losing some weight, since almost none of the women in our current cohort analysis lost sufficient weight to achieve normal weight,” said lead study author Dr. Rowan Chlebowski of the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California.

“That should be an encouraging result for women since modest sustained weight loss can be achievable by many, while weight loss sufficient to return to a non-obese or overweight category is quite difficult,” Chlebowski said.

All of the women in the study had gone through menopause, when menstruation stops and production of the hormone estrogen drops. After menopause, women’s main source of estrogen is fat tissue; being overweight or obese can increase the risk of cancer because estrogen can help tumors grow.

“Women who are overweight or obese likely have an increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer due to increased hormone levels associated with fat cells,” said Dr. Daniel Schauer of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, who wasn’t involved in the study.

“These hormones, especially estrogen, can promote the development of postmenopausal breast cancer,” Schauer told Reuters Health by email. “Losing weight decreases the levels of circulating hormones.”

The disorder, which is known as slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), is one of the most common hip problems in children and adolescents. It can lead the ball at the head of the thigh bone to slip backward and often requires surgery to repair. The condition has long been linked to obesity, which can put extra pressure on bones. However, research to date hasn’t offered decisive evidence that obesity directly causes SCFE.

 

Children with severe obesity were almost six times more likely to develop SCFE and youth who were less obese were almost four times more likely to develop SCFE, when compared to kids who were a normal weight .

 

“Some doctors, in particular orthopedic surgeons, have long believed that SCFE is linked to childhood obesity, though this has been very difficult to prove,” said lead study author Daniel Perry of the University of Liverpool in the UK.

 

“This is the first (of hopefully several studies) that will confirm that obesity is bad for children – in this case bad because it increases the risk of a rare but ‘nasty’ orthopedic condition which could be disabling. Children who are not overweight tend to be more active, fitter and healthier – and this can only be good for you.” said Eastwood
