Ben Bruce Quits Senatorial Race

The senator representing Bayelsa east, Ben Murray Bruce, has withdrawn from the race to represent his constituency in 2019.

The senator made this known in a letter he wrote to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday.

The Commonsense Senator abandoned his ambition to represent the Bayelsa East Senatorial District due to the massive rejection of his candidacy by the stakeholders of the district.

The letter said: “I thank God and the good people of Brass, Bayelsa East Senatorial District who offered me the golden opportunity four years ago to represent them and the state in the Senate, Nigeria’s highest lawmaking chamber.

“It is without doubt that I have tried to discharge my duties as a legislator and representative of my people creditably to the best of my ability so far.

“My voice has been very loud on the issues that matter to our people and our country at all time.

“My support to our party, my people and state government is unquestionable. I am humbled that the national leadership of my party supported by the State chapter in appreciation of my efforts offered to support my reelection to the senate to continue my service.

“I have also intensified consultations in the last couple of week in the course of which I have come to realize an existing local rotational arrangement of over 20 years beginning with the late Great Chief Melford Okilo, by which arrangement the Senatorial seat rotates per local government area among the three councils for four years in the Senatorial District.

“Even with the support of my party at the National and state levels with the full backing of my state government and leadership, as a man of honour interested in the well-being of my people, I hereby announce my withdrawal from the Senatorial race.

“I do not want whatever reason to appear to have used my privileged position and influence to do anything other than the well-being and the stability and the good of the people.

“I am in all of these for the people, not for myself.

“Once again, I thank the former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebelo Jonathan, the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, my colleagues in the Senate and Governor of Bayelsa State, the Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson for their support and encouragement.

“I also thank the leadership of my Senatorial District and state, for being there for me.

“I thank specially the people of my constituency for their trust and confidence in me to serve and represent them in the Senate.

“By trusting me with this mandate, I have come to know them and our people even better, an experience I will never forget for the rest of my life.

“I am indeed grateful to my darling wife, my children, and other members of my family for their support and prayers. I appreciate the efforts of my hardworking campaign staff for their support and dedication.

“Again, I thank the leadership of the party for their continuing support. I also assured the party of my availability and readiness to serve at any capacity when the opportunity comes”.

APC NWC panel distances self from ongoing Lagos primaries

TheCable reports that the National Working Committee (NWC) panel in charge of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Lagos has dissociated itself from the ongoing exercise.

The committee opposed the option A4 mode used in the election, expressing a preference for secret ballot system.

Sleep-deprived teens more apt to drink, smoke and have unsafe sex

A study of U.S. high school students suggests that teens who get too little sleep may be more likely to engage in risky behaviors like drinking, smoking, and unprotected sex than their peers who get enough rest at night.

Roughly seven in 10 American high school students average less than eight hours of sleep a night, falling short of the recommended eight to 10 hours adolescents need for optimal physical and mental health, the study found.

Compared with teens who got at least eight hours of sleep, high school students who got less than six hours were twice as likely to drink alcohol, almost twice as likely to use tobacco, and more than twice as likely to use other drugs or engage in risky sexual activity.

High school students who got less than six hours of sleep a night were also more than three times more likely to engage in self-harm activities or to contemplate or attempt suicide, compared to teens who got eight hours or more of sleep on a typical night.

While the study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how sleep might directly impact teen behavior, it’s possible that insufficient sleep leads to changes in the brain that make risky behavior more likely, said lead study author Matthew Weaver of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

“One possible physiologic mechanism is that insufficient and poor quality sleep is associated with reduced activation of the prefrontal cortex, an area that is critical for executive function and logical reasoning,” Weaver said by email.

“Regions of the brain that are related to reward processing are also affected, potentially leading to more impulsive and emotionally-driven decisions,” Weaver added.

His team examined nearly 68,000 surveys completed by high school students between 2007 and 2015.

During the study period, the proportion of students reporting less than eight hours of sleep on an average school night rose from 68.9 percent to 71.9 percent, researchers report in JAMA Pediatrics.

Youth with the lowest average amounts of sleep – less than six hours – had the highest rates of unsafe behaviors. But researchers also found risks associated with six or seven hours a night.

For example, teens who got seven hours of sleep a night were 28 percent more likely to drink, 13 percent more likely to smoke, and 17 percent more likely to try drugs other than marijuana, compared to adolescents who got at least eight hours of shut-eye.

One limitation of the study is that it relied on teenagers to accurately report their sleeping habits and risky behaviors, the authors note. It’s also possible that factors not measured in the study might impact both sleep times and risky behaviors.

Parents may have a hard time getting teens to bed early, but they can still take steps to ensure adolescents get enough rest, said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, director of the Pediatric Neurology Sleep Medicine Program at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.

“Families should work together to set guidelines for sleep and achieve common goals, such as improved grades, better mood, and more energy, and parents should advocate against caffeine and late night electronic use as both can disrupt sleep,” Kansagra, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email.

And it’s important that parents lead by example.

“It’s hard to ban your adolescent from consuming caffeine while you have a cup of coffee in your hand,” Kansagra said.

Manchester United Midfielder, and France international Paul Pogba has raised more eyebrows regarding his relationship with manager, Jose Mourinho by refusing to answer questions regarding Manchester United, and Instead asking “You want me dead?”

This occured after United were dumped out of the Carabao cup by Derby in midweek and as news filtered out that the world cup winner had been stripped of his vice-captainship.

Pogba has said before that he was unable to speak his mind for fear of being fined by the club.

He didn’t mince worlds after the game against Wolves though, and urged Mourinho to “attack” especially when United was playing at home.

Manchester United also lost their last game against West-Ham which further piles more pressure on Mourinho.
