Racial disparities visible in U.S. heart rhythm treatment

According to new study, black patients in the U.S. with atrial fibrillation – an irregular heart rhythm – are less likely to receive the medications that would help prevent stroke, the most dangerous outcome of the condition, compared to whites and Hispanics.

“We found that African American patients were much less likely to receive the newer class of anticoagulant medications than whites, even after controlling for socioeconomic factors, such as income, education and insurance type,” said Dr. Utibe Essien of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and core investigator at the Center for Health Equity and Research Promotion at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System in Pennsylvania.

Why Your Breath Smells Badly?

Dr Innocent Osazuwa, a medical practitioner, Benin in Edo, says persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum disease, NAN reports.

Osazuwa, a dentist at the Calvary Estate Hospital, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Benin.

Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. Bacteria cause the formation of toxins to form, which irritate the gums. If gum disease continues untreated, it can damage the gums and jawbone.

Osazuwa said that bad breath, also called halitosis, could be embarrassing and in some cases might even cause anxiety.

“Bad breath is often caused by a buildup of bacteria in your mouth that causes inflammation and gives off noxious odors.

“Cleaning between teeth daily once a day is very important.

“Tooth decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles cannot reach”.

“This helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line too,” he said.

He said that brushing of the teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and replacing your toothbrush every three or four months helped to eliminate bad breath.

The dentist said the symptoms of bad breath vary, depending on the source or the underlying cause.

According to him, some people worry too much about their breath even though they have little or no mouth odor, while others have bad breath and do not know it.

He said the causes of bad breath includes food, poor dental hygiene, tobacco products, lack of balanced diet, wrong medications, dry mouth and lack of drinking water.

Innocent advised anyone with such problems to see a dentist for treatment.

How Twitter users saved UNILAG law student from ending his life

True to the words of Paulo Coelho which reads that “when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it,” so is the case of Adefehinti Scott‏, a Student of Law at the University of Lagos, who has been saved from imminent suicide by kind-spirited Twitter users after days of battling to raise money for his fees to resume at the Nigerian Law School.

Scott, who is himself a Twitter user had on two occasions posted on his handle that he might not go to law school because he could not raise N296,000 for the purpose, stating that he had gone into depression.

It however got worse when on Tuesday, he tweeted that he was a depressed human walking the street with a fake smile. and that he wanted to end his life. Same day, he posted a screenshot of a message with a friend who expressed surprise that he was yet to raise the money, suggesting therefore that he may had to defer the admission until the next batch.

Still bent on pursuing his dreams, Scott on Wednesday tweeted his bank details soliciting funds from users of the platform, while imploring them to retweet the message in order to pull through on raising the money.

On Thursday however, he returned to his Twitter handle with screenshots of his fees paid and as shown in a tweet by another user, even got bus fares to school.

Wonders like they say, truly happen!

Blac Chyna heading to trial with the Kardashian and Jenner family

Blac Chyna is heading to trial with the Kardashian and Jenner family over claims they damaged her career

A year ago, the mother of two and ex-fiancee of Rob Kardashian filed a lawsuit against the Keeping Up With The Kardashian stars in October 2017 for damaging her career by canceling her hit TV series Rob & Chyna with her then-fiance Rob Kardashian.

On Wednesday via a statement released, her attorney, Lisa Bloom made the announcement.

‘For over a year, Blac Chyna has been fighting to get her day in court against Robert Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian West, Khloé Kardashian and Kylie Jenner,’ Chyna’s lawyer
‘Chyna alleges that she was slut-shamed, defamed and the victim of a plot to kill her hit show, Rob & Chyna, causing her significant financial damages.’

According to Bloom, the Kardashian family has tried to avoid going to trial.

‘The Kardashian family has filed numerous motions with the court, seeking to have the case thrown out so that Chyna would not get to present her case at trial,’ she said.

‘As her attorneys, we have fought these motions every step of the way, and the case has remained alive.’

‘Today the court rejected the Kardashian family’s request to strike Chyna’s entire lawsuit,’ she added.

‘Instead, the court struck only portions of six paragraphs out of a 317-paragraph complaint,’ it was added.

‘Most importantly, all of Chyna’s legal claims stay in. Chyna will therefore be permitted to have her day in court.’

It was also shared that Chyna and her team ‘look forward to getting a trial date next month.’

Chyna alleged that Kris, Kim, Khloé, and Kylie published defamatory things about her and kept the second season of Rob & Chyna from becoming a reality.

The next court date for the case is set for Monday, January 7.
